look book

09th october 2019 - 11th november 2019

My lookbook is aimed at both genders aged 16-18 who go to Chichester college. I plan on creating something that is educational because I want other students to see how easy it is to create a last minute costume. 16-18 year old's are approximately on their phone for 7-10 hours a day, this makes it easy to advertise my lookbook as i can constantly promote my work and not having to worry that it's not getting insights. I plan on using drum and bass as the background music, whilst having a dark pallet throughout the video.

My lookbook idea is based on halloween outfits, in a subtle way. I plan on recording footage in a theme park, night club and college. Although these locations are very different from each other, i feel like i could collect a lot of different styles and designs from these location which will give me a wide range of models, that could enable me to edit a lot of footage and create a short lookbook. I think this will be popular because I will advertise it on instagram, snapchat and youtube.

What does this project mean to me?

-With this project I will be able to express my passion for fashion

-I can work on my editing and filming skills

-This project could heavily impact on my choices for my final major project.

What ideas do I have?

-Educational

   -Cheap clothes whilst looking good

   -Last minuet looks

-Entertaining

-Video game styled editing, character election menu

   -Halloween outfits

   -Cat walk style lookbook

-Fashion week inspired lookbook

This is my groups remake of a classic Shakespeare, this task was good as we got to explore different angle shots and play around with the camera. This is our starting point towards creating our lookbooks and we are starting to develop our skills.

At 00.35, the shot title changed it's self from 'Framing Shot' to 'Cow boy Shot'.  By noticing this mistake I am reminded to double check the whole film before exporting it. However I like the added coloured layer being pink as it adds a dreamy atmosphere, which is perfect because this is a short film on 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. I made this film very simple as I was getting used to using premier pro.

I created this moodboard as it will help me visually plan what I want to record and how I want thing to look like. The images I have chosen have been carefully thought through, I've kept it at a simple theme which is halloween and I've planned out the main colours I want to use. This moodpboard also includes the locations, what I'm planning to do for make up and what I'll hopefully wear.

Filming, Editing and Location

I am planning on filming at several locations, Thorpe park, Bournemouth Halo and Chichester College. I have created a risk assessment covering these three places. I also plan on filming different simplistic halloween costumes with SFX make up, I want to film using a minimalist amount of angel shots as I want to focus heavily on the editing of the video. I plan on using premier pro for my editing, because I can easily download different effects without having to pay for it. Using premier pro is also good as I can easily access it on the computers at college and I can get assistance if I struggle on anything.

Hypodemic needle theory, the theory where media can deliver a highly convincing concept that would affect the viewer's opinion. This is very conversational as the viewers may feel as if they have their own independence in their opinion.

Uses and gratification theory, the theory where people who use media for different purposes, such as learning something by watching a youtube tutorial, or they use it for entertainment by watching films or listening to music. some also use it for social interactions, like talking about a new product that came out.

This look book is a great example of target audience as the style of this video is in a character selection page. This easily shows that this is aimed at 16-19 year old's as that's the age group that spends the most time on gaming.

They've created this lookbook to be entertaining with the gaming layout, I think as a viewer I would take this look book and share it around saying it looks similar to the game Sims 4. This lookbook has a model who is skinny, this isn't good as viewers could think that being skinny is the answer to being beautiful, it teaches the audience, especially at such a young age, that they're not good enough.

I understood the audience media usage and preferences quite well, as I got a graph that showed what social platforms are used quite regularly. Whilst doing the questionnaire I understood other people’s preferences which helped me build my look book. By getting these information, it created a foundation for my look book and from there I can build on to it. However I can improve this by getting more information on what components I should include in my look book.

I should’ve planned a small visit to my locations and take photographs so I could have a sense of what the layout would look like and which footage would intertwine with each other.

The best platforms to release my look book would be on snapchat, youtube and Instagram. This is because the majority of 16-18 year olds use these platforms quite often. By releasing my look book on these platforms I know that I’ll have a lot of coverage and it’ll become popular quite easily.

By getting research from my peers I will create a moodboard and I will also be able to look back on the research and check if there’s anything that needs to be altered. By getting this research I am able to also create something that everyone will enjoy.

Youtube tutorials: By following youtube tutorials, you can easily pause the video and you can rewind. However it does get confusing as the person who’s explaining it could have an older/newer softwear and they could use more difficult processes.

Pairing up with a friend and testing the software: this is good as you could both learn at the same time, you could play around and document each tools. Although this isn’t too great as it could take long and you’ll be limited to simplistic things.

Reading a software manual: this is good as you can learn in depth of what to do. However there may be a certain effect you’re trying to pull off but it’s not in the manual.

To find out about the uses and gratifications media theory, what are the pros and cons of the following methods?

Read a dictionary definition: This is good as it’s the official meaning, however it could mean something else to different people in the media industry. This will confuse you and it’ll just lead you one way.

Use Wikipedia: Wikipedia is good as you can easily access it and it’s straightforward. However anyone can edit Wikipedia which makes it unreliable.

Ask a group of peers to give their opinion: This is good as you can all get involved as a group, however not everyone will know what it fully means so that means you won’t get a solid answer.

My aims for this project was to entertain the audience by creating something modern yet still have a vintage look. I wanted to explore the different aspects of SFX and get a range of different outfits. The skills i wanted to develop in stage one included photoshop, knowing my way around a video camera and a digital camera, premier pro and photoshop. I wanted to develop these skills, because when I finish university and get a job in the media industry, I want to have some basic knowledge in these programs which I would build up to from there.

I planned my time quite well, for my magazine I made sure to experiment on photoshop and I played around premier pro. I made sure to practice taking the perfect photo, I did that by taking a lot of photographs and choosing the best ones. For my look book, I created a moodboard to see visually what I wanted to have in my look book, I also made sure to create a questionnaire to see what my audience would like to see in the look books. I could've had more planning by creating a story board and creating mock ups of my magazine and look book.

I only used visual planning on creating my mood board, I should've created a story board as having that would help structure my work even more. The story board would've helped me have more variety on different camera shots, this would've made my look book more interesting rather than applying a lot go overlays.

I asked my peers on what I could improve on and they mentioned how I could sync up more of the footage with the music. I did this by making sure that 'Ransome by lil Tecca' starts when the actual video does, I left the loading screen without to add some tension, a soon as the blue screen hits, the music starts and the first part of the lyrics match up to the footage of me.

I found the edit effects section to be the most useful as I could change the opacity and use the 'ult' effect to remove green screen. This was helpful because it allowed me to add the framed camera and the different glitch effects. The ult key was helpful as it allowed me to have a more complex yet simple outcome, by using that tool it showed me that I could grab any green screen footage and easily edit it so it looks so seamless. I made sure to google youtube tutorials on how to create a VHS video. I downloaded different overlays and decided which one was the best for my look book, I tried out different layouts and overlays layering each other till I found the one which I think suited my look book.

I think I should've had more contrast in my video as at some parts it looked quiet dark and you can't really see anything. I also think it should've been longer and have less effects. I will make sure to go back onto this if I create another project using premier pro.

I used premier pro, this was good as I could easily google the softwear and follow different tutorials. I also know that if I google premier pro for tutorials, they'll have thousands because it's such a popular softwear. Although, this could be a problem as other people may have different versions of premier pro, the one that I have could be older than someone else's and if I watch a tutorial they created, I could get confused. I used premier pro to develop my work by trying out new things and perfectly executing them, I stepped out of my comfort zone and made sure to use a range of tools which I know will get me a higher grade.

Stage one has helped me more towards an editor or an artist production. This is because I really enjoyed editing on premier pro. When I was researching the job roles, I came across the job role of an artist production. I think this job role is amazing because I have a passion for the fine art and I think this job role would be perfect for me.
